WHAT IS COACHING?

In this busy hectic world, we often put important parts of our lives on hold for our jobs, spouses, children and friends. Life in the new millenium is extreme. More and more people seem to be experiencing increased stress in their lives. We frequently hear complaints about not enough time, job burnout, being confronted with too many choices and decisions, and a feeling of spinning one's wheels.

Happily, help has arrived in the form of coaching, a powerful antidote to life in this era. A coach is someone who helps you think out loud, supports you when you take a solid hit, serves as your wake-up call and is your partner in achieving your personal and professional goals.

To put it another way:

Coaching is a personal and powerful relationship focused on having, doing and being what you want in life. A coach provides a simple, yet effective structure of support to assist you in moving forward in significant areas of your life: career, health, romance, personal growth, spirituality, fun and recreation, physical environment, and friends and family. A coach will help you—

bullet.gif (1017 bytes)  Devise action plans and strategies

bullet.gif (1017 bytes)  Set goals for specific results

bullet.gif (1017 bytes)  Move beyond stops and difficulties

bullet.gif (1017 bytes)  Manage your time and energy more effectively

Coaching works! Here's why:

1. Some of us don't know where we're going, what our lives are about, and what our values and goals are. Coaching helps us clarify our purpose, values, and goals.

2. We may know where we're going and what we need to do, but we forget or get stuck in our limiting belief systems, ineffective habits, or inability to focus. A coach gets us back on track by helping us identify limiting beliefs and ineffective habits and find more effective ways of being.

3. Many times we resist change because it's easier and more comfortable to stay the way we are. Any change we make causes resistance and backlash within ourselves as well as from other people in our lives. A coach helps us move beyond that resistance —with greater ease and flow. In the coaching relationship you may decide to work on all areas of your life at once or just focus on one. Coaching clients typically report —

bullet.gif (1017 bytes)  Enhanced and satisfying relationships

bullet.gif (1017 bytes)  Less procrastination and fewer stops

bullet.gif (1017 bytes)  A more balanced and fulfilled life

bullet.gif (1017 bytes)  Faster and bigger results

bullet.gif (1017 bytes)  Increased earnings and productivity

Coaching really works—Get on board!

HOW TO CHOOSE A COACH

Before contacting a coach, have a clear picture of what your needs are. Both clients’ needs and coaches’ skills can vary considerably. Finding a good client-coach match can depend greatly on how well you are able to articulate your needs in an initial interview.

With a list of your needs in hand, contact several potential coaches and ask questions similar to these:

bullet.gif (1017 bytes) How long have you been coaching?

bullet.gif (1017 bytes) What training have you had? Are you certified?

bullet.gif (1017 bytes) I have identified the following as my coaching needs…(state your needs here, e.g. clarifying your vision, expanding your business, achieving more balance, time management/clutter control). What is your experience in these areas?

bullet.gif (1017 bytes) How do you work (e.g. in person, by telephone or e-mail coaching)?

bullet.gif (1017 bytes) How often will we speak?

bullet.gif (1017 bytes) What are your fees? How/when is payment due?

bullet.gif (1017 bytes) Is there anything you want to tell me about you and your coaching?

bullet.gif (1017 bytes) Do you offer a free sample session?

Based on your initial interview, you should come away with the answers to your questions, a sense of the coach as a person, and an indication whether this would be a good client-coach match.
